Handloom is one of the most ancient industry in India. While the growth has been different in different states of the country, some regions it has attained the status of a mature industry, while in others, it is still confined to the needs of the household. The last few years have seen a change in the mechanised textile industry. The production has moved from home to factories, leaving weavers jobless and suicidal. Apart from Asian countries like Srilanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Cambodia, it is non-existent in other parts of the world.
ZariVastram recently came up with a campaign to #SaveTheWeavers and restore the traditional art of handloom and making clothes with love! We are associating with the best of brands in this fight to improve the plight of handloom weavers in India.
We have joined hands with Zari Vastaram in the cause and here is why! We believe that hand woven work is being given less attention than what it deserves. “India’s rich tradition heavily influenced by the weaving tradition, the complete is meant to flourish given its significance in our roots.”
We provide women the opportunity to cash in their clothes and other fashionable items with utmost ease and fun. Inspired by a collaborative economy, we help women to continually and affordably refresh their closet by buying and selling preloved fashion!. At KlosetEdit, one can shop an exclusive collection of premium, luxury and designer brands at droolworthy prices.
Weaving is very time consuming and labour intensive, a steadier recognition of work in terms of monetary appreciation should work well to make weavers financially stable.
We believe that designers in the fashion industry can help weavers become financially stable by ensuring that other than the regular pay, they are incentivised for the work they do. One of the main concerns for their suicides in most part of the country is due to the low income they generate. We think designers should first ensure that the money a weaver makes is at par with the value he is adding to the collection/label..just like with any other job.
An awareness campaign is integral to initiate a change, and ZariVastram has taken a right step in the direction!
Given the importance of weaving to our culture and integrity, spreading awareness about how the weaving industry is dying a slow death can be an eye opener for the masses and more attention towards the situation will help in driving change. We believe that the fellow weavers can be saved from becoming extinct if all of us promote wearing what they make and give recognition to the industry that it deserves.
